Home Escape Plan
Home Up

It is important that your family develop and practice a Home Fire Escape Plan, especially if you have young children!

  • Sit down with your family and make step by step plans for emergency fire escape.
  • Diagram (2) routes to the outside from all rooms, but especially from bedrooms. Some family members may need a special escape ladder.
  • Use the "911" emergency number to call the fire department. Post the number on all your phones
  • Choose a place outdoors for everyone to meet, such as a mailbox or tree.
  • Discuss why you shouldn't go back inside once you are out.
  • Provide a means for each person to warn others in the house of a fire.
  • Make sure your home has proper smoke detectors.
  • Start sleeping with the door closed. The door holds back smoke and fire while you escape and helps prevent you from being overtaken by smoke in your sleep.
  • Doors should be felt for heat before opening. Fire may be on the other side.
  • Make sure children can operate the windows, descend a ladder, or lower themselves to the ground as needed.
  • Practice what to do if you become trapped. Put closed doors between you and the smoke. Tell children not to hide. Wait at the window and signal with a sheet or flashlight. Instruct children to go to the fire fighter if they have to be rescued.
  • Don't go back into a burning house to get toys or pets.
  • Practice your fire escape plan.
